What about Porn?

When Porn Is a Big Problem

Pornography may have started out as a “little problem” years ago, but now your life seems controlled by it. You might struggle to be sexual with your partner without replaying pornography in your mind. You may even prefer having sex with yourself (masturbation) and watching pornography to having sex with your spouse.

Porn Addiction and Sex Addiction

Sex addiction refers to uncontrollable and excessive sexual thoughts, desires, urges, or behaviors. These behaviors can cause distress and harm to your relationships, your finances, your career, and other aspects of your life.

Sex addiction is when your sexual thoughts and activities consume your life. The same out-of-control feelings and cravings someone has who is addicted to drugs or alcohol are also experienced by sex addicts.

Porn addicts experience the same feelings and urges. They choose to satisfy those urges through behaviors that rely on cybersex or virtual outlets, such as viewing pornography online, writing or reading sexually explicit stories, visiting sexually oriented chat rooms, engaging in online affairs, and more.

Regardless of the type of cybersex activity, the heart of your struggles depends on whether these behaviors are out of your control.

  2. replaces positive things like education, exercise, and conversation
  3. creates risk and loss of relationship, marriage, job, health, freedom, or life

How Do You Know If Porn Is a Problem?

How do you know if cybersex activities are indeed an Internet addiction? Consider the following checklist:

  • Are you using suggestive screen names?

  • Do you have secret email accounts?

  • Are you spending more time on the Internet that is impacting other activities?

  • Are you telling lies to cover up your online activities?

  • Has there been an escalation of your behavior?

  • Are you involved in risky and/or dangerous activities?

  • Have you been caught, made a promise to change, and then repeated your behavior?

  • Are you unable to stop any of these activities?

The presence of any of these may or may not be an indication of problematic and addictive Internet or cyber sexual behavior. Sex addiction may or may not be present. A thorough evaluation and assessment should be performed by a professional to determine the appropriate next steps for you to take.
