Survival Phase

Timing

• This is the beginning of the journey of recovery from sex addiction.     

Who Is in This Phase?

• Persons just beginning recovery.  

 

• Persons having recently slipped or relapsed.   

 

• Persons who have not been able to establish a period of sobriety.   

 

• Persons who have recently experienced a crisis related to acting out.    

Focus of Therapy

Treatment Options  

• Three-Day Intensives for Couples   

 

 -

Each morning and each afternoon there are individual and couples sessions.  Equivalent to several months of individual therapy for each person and several months of couples therapy.  

 

 -

Offered in the Canadian Rockies near Banff, Alberta, or in Houston, Texas (travel, lodging and meals not included).   

 

• Three-Day Intensives for Men

 

 -

Intensive sessions each morning and afternoon with rigorous assignments for each evening.  Equivalent of up to 6 months of individual therapy.

 

 -

Offered in the Canadian Rockies near Banff, Alberta, or in Houston, Texas (travel, lodging and meals not included).   

 

• Weekend Mini Intensives for Couples 

 

 -

Friday evening through Saturday mid-day.
 

 -

All sessions are with the couple (no individual sessions).  Intensive therapy to help work through crisis or get a couple started in recovery.

Friday evening through Saturday mid-day.

Intensive work with men focused on establishing and maintaining long-term sobriety.  Get the equivalent of 8 weeks of therapy in one weekend.

Behaviors Necessary to Move to Next Phase   • Establish early sobriety.   
 

• Be engaged in regular recovery work  (i.e., has a sponsor, routinely attends two
  or more "S" type 12-step meetings a week).  

Stability Phase

Timing • This phase begins from 6 months to 2 years into recovery and lasts for
  1 year or more.   

Who Is in This Phase?

• Persons who have established sobriety, have good recovery routines
  established (including regular attendance at “S” type 12-step groups),
  and are actively working with a sponsor.  
Focus of Therapy  • For individuals:

Making recovery routines life-long habits.

Preventing relapse.    
  • For couples:

Enhancing communication.

Learning conflict resolution skills.

Sessions are 90 minutes in length.  Minimum commitment is for 12 sessions.  Clients can remain in group as long as it is beneficial to their recovery.   
Behaviors Necessary to Move to Next Phase   • Client has made a complete disclosure of acting out behavior to relation-
   ship partner.
  • Client lives “slip free” and has been free from all acting out behaviors for
   at least 6 months. 
  • Client routinely uses the tools of recovery.
  • Client has moved from seeing recovery tasks as a burden to seeing
   them as tasks that bring freedom and restore integrity.
  • Partner is actively working on their own recovery.
  • Relationship is stabilized around recovery norms. 
  

Sustaining Phase

(Lasts
1 year or more)

Timing • This phase begins 18 months to 3 years into recovery and lasts 1 year 
   or more.    

Who Is in This Phase?

• Clients who have made a disclosure of their acting out behaviors to their
   relationship partner, are successfully living “slip free,” with unbroken 
   sobriety of at least six months, and whose partner is actively working 
   their own recovery. 
Focus of Therapy  • For individuals:

Completing the “basic tasks” of recovery. 
  • For couples:  
 

 -

Learning and practicing healthy sexuality.  
Treatment Options   • Individual Step-Down Recovery Package

One 45-minute session every other week.  
  • Couples Step-Down Recovery Package

One 90-minute session every other week. 
  • Travel Package

One or two 45-minute sessions per week.

Behaviors Necessary to Move to Next Phase   • Client has worked all 12 steps of recovery.
  • Client has been free from all acting out behaviors for a minimum of 1 year.
  • Client’s anger and resentments are well managed.
  • Relationship is growing. 

  

Maintenance Phase

Timing

• Clients have been in recovery for 2 ½ years or more when they reach 
   this phase.  They typically spend the first 6 to 12 months in this phase 
   actively working recovery.  Clients in this phase ultimately move out of 
   therapy or use therapy sporadically to address specific concerns, work 
   on “rough spots” in their relationships, or do periodic recovery 
   check-ups. 

Who Is in This Phase?

• Clients with at least 1 year of unbroken sobriety.
  • Clients who are living a balanced, growing life. 
  • Clients for whom acting out has become more of a memory than a present
   temptation.
Focus of Therapy  • For individuals:

Refining and refocusing the recovery routine.
 

 -

Learning to balance recovery activities with other areas of life.
  • For couples:  
 

 -

Expanding skills learned earlier (i.e., communication, boundaries, healthy sexuality).

One 45-minute session per month.  
  • Couples Maintenance Recovery Package

One 90-minute session per month. 
  • Travel Step-Down Package

   continued recovery.
  • Relationship is stable and growing.
  • Substantial to complete trust has been restored in relationship.
